THE EIGHTEEN SAKTI PEETHAS AND THEIR PLACES

Every Hindu desires to know the places of eighteen sakti peethas and their prominence. Most unfortunate it is neither the Government nor the religious heads and seers give authenticated information either about the jyothirlingaas or about the sakti peethaas.

During my recent visit to Western Indian places I observed a fancy display of JYOTIRLING and SAKTI PEETH even at ordinary temples. It may have to be agreed that whereever a temple exists, there a Lord exists and the Lord in general is powerful but that does not mean that the word JYOTHIRLING AND SAKTI PEETHA are used very casually. There is an utter confusion about the location of Jyothirlingaas and sakti peethaas. Some one in Bihar claims that they have a jyothirling and some one in Gujarat claims that he has renovated the jyothirling temple and this is a practical confusing situation for any Hindu.

I really do not understand why the seers do something in this aspect leaving their claims that Lord Vishnu is greater than others and vice versa. Hindu religion is one and it accepts all Lords with different names as ONE. One should not try to differentiate and introduce a conflict, which may lead a further disaster in future. Particularly the religious heads should not try for their individual supremacy and they should know the religion is supreme. They should feel like protecting the value of the religion first and remain on one platform always without showing publicly their difference of opinion which will dilute the following and plant a seed of hatreds towards the religion.

I am trying to indicate the places of sakti peethas to the extent of my knowledge and I request for reader’s support in the form of suggestions to improve upon if needed.

PANCHAYATANAM AND THE IMPORTANCE OF IT- THE BEST FORMS OF LORDS FOR ALL ROUND PROSPERITY
(An informatory letter)
As per the Vedic texts, five deities are expected to be worshipped and they are 1) Lord Ganapathi, 2) Sri Suryanarayana Murthy – the Sun God, 3) Saligramam – Lord Vishnu, 4) Mother Goddess – Goddess Sakti, and 5) Lord Shiva. Who ever wishes to worship Lord Vishnu, the idol of Lord Vishnu in the form of Saligram is to be kept in the center and the other four deities in the four corners and similarly specific corners are clearly indicated. The deep Red Color stone available in Sone river is used for Lord Ganesh, Crystal form of Sun is used for the Sun God, Saligram available in Gandaki river is used for Lord Vishnu, Sri Yantra (either Meru or Bhuprastaram) is used for Goddess sakti while Ban Ling available in Narmada River is used for Lord Shiva.

For Lord Ganesh Coral stone Ganesh is normally used since the deep red color stone of Sone River is not easily available. The Crystal form of Sun Lord is normally available. Similarly Narmada Ban Ling is also available and in the absence of it we have seen people worshipping TIGER-EYE SHIV LINGA for gaining public attraction, MERCURY Shiva Ling for financial prosperity, Pure Crystal Shiva Ling for all round development. Shiva Ling form is available in many dhatus too and people prefer their choice in this matter.

There are varieties of Saligrams and instead of preferring a normal saligram suggest using of Amruth Saligram which is quite transparent and very light in weight. In the absence of this, a few in the Himalayan ranges are found using SRI KURMAM – the great tortoise – one of the avatar of Lord Vishnu with the DHAN KAARAK number based structure on its back denoting this as GODDESS LAKSHMI AND LORD VISHNU. In the recent Fengshui like arts, the tortoise also acquired lot of importance and people are seen preferring these form even as ornamental pieces in their homes.

With regard to Goddess in Sri Yantra, this day’s people prefer the vertical shaped SRI YANTRA compared to the flat bhuprastaram. Sri Yentas made out of crystal – pure crystal are normally available and CARE SHOULD BE TAKEN WHILE SELECTING THE SRI YANTRA THAT ALL THE ANGLES ARE PERFECT and it should be got checked up by an experienced person particularly while referring to the upper triangle.

SRI YANTRAS are also available in rose quartz, which is normally considered the best for financial soundness and acquiring of assets. Sri Yantra in Sun Stone is helpful in regaining the lost health. Similarly Sri Yentas made out of jade are also good for progress in business and financial structure. Sri Yantra made out of pure Mercury are very costly but surely of good help as per the experiences gained by us. During Diwali normally SRI YANTRA or MERCURY LAKSHMI IS WORSHIPPED FOR FINANCIAL GAINS. SIMILARLY one may go for black star Sri Kurmam or Crystal Sri Kurmam with a number plate on its back either in Gold or in Silver. Similarly Sun Stone Sri Kurmam can also be worshipped for job prosperity and career up-liftment PARTICULARLY DURING DIWALI AND IN KARTIK MONTH.

While Panchayatana idol worship is according to the Vedic order of life, the different varieties of idol worship is found in different parts of the country and it is a good and suggested way for a God believer. Be sure to use properly made idols and you may start using them after getting them checked up with an experienced person in these lines.

It is open for all to read the book written on different idols and follow guidelines of the experienced in these matters.
MAY PANCHAYATANA LORDS GRANT YOU ALL THAT YOU RICHLY DESIRE AND DESERVE.

in praise of India

In Praise of India

1. Will Durant, American historian: "India was the motherland of our race, and Sanskrit the mother of Europe's languages: she was the mother of our philosophy; mother, through the Arabs, of much of our mathematics; mother, through the Buddha, of the ideals embodied in Christianity; mother, through the village community, of self-government and democracy. Mother India is in many ways the mother of us all"

2. Mark Twain, American author: "India is, the cradle of the human race, the birthplace of human speech, the mother of history, the grandmother of legend, and the great grand mother of tradition. our most valuable and most instructive materials in the history of man are treasured up in India only."

3. Albert Einstein, American scientist: "We owe a lot to the Indians, who taught us how to count, without which no worthwhile scientific discovery could have been made."

4. Max Mueller, German scholar: If I were asked under what sky the human mind has most fully developed some of its choicest gifts, has most deeply pondered on the greatest problems of life, and has found solutions, I should point to India.

5. Romain Rolland, French scholar : "If there is one place on the face of earth where all the dreams of living men have found a home from the very earliest days when man began the dream of existence, it is India."

6. Hu Shih, former Ambassador of China to USA: "India conquered and dominated China culturally for 20 centuries without ever having to send a single soldier across her border."

7. Mark Twain: "So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked."

8. Keith Bellows, VP - National Geographic Society : "There are some parts of the world that, once visited, get into your heart and won’t go. For me, India is such a place. When I first visited, I was stunned by the richness of the land, by its lush beauty and exotic architecture, by its ability to overload the senses with the pure, concentrated intensity of its colors, smells, tastes, and sounds... I had been seeing the world in black & white and, when brought face-to-face with India, experienced everything re-rendered in brilliant technicolor."

9. Mark Twain: "India has two million gods, and worships them all. In religion all other countries are paupers; India is the only millionaire."

10. A Rough Guide to India: "It is impossible not to be astonished by India. Nowhere on Earth does humanity present itself in such a dizzying, creative burst of cultures and religions, races and tongues. Enriched by successive waves of migration and marauders from distant lands, every one of them left an indelible imprint which was absorbed into the Indian way of life. Every aspect of the country presents itself on a massive, exaggerated scale, worthy in comparison only to the superlative mountains that overshadow it. It is this variety which provides a breathtaking ensemble for experiences that is uniquely Indian. Perhaps the only thing more difficult than to be indifferent to India would be to describe or understand India completely. There are perhaps very few nations in the world with the enormous variety that India has to offer. Modern day India represents the largest democracy in the world with a seamless picture of unity in diversity unparalleled anywhere else."

HINDU RELIGIOUS CALENDARS AND SYSTEMS

It is my desire not to write any thing relating to religion etc. But it has become essential that I felt bad in some of the areas particularly relating to non-maintaining of uniformity in the age-old procedures and systems.

In the recent past I have noticed a lay man- a villager asking straight one of the Jagadgurus of one Sankara Peetham when there was a confusion on the day of observing one of the prominent Hindu Festival. His Holiness could not answer the lay man’s question. What I wonder is that there is no REGULATORY AUTHORITY in the matter of publication of Calendars. There is no system in India as such to judge the suitability and authenticity of publication of Hindu Religious calendars. Any one can claim as the PUNDIT and start publishing any calendar. In other words there is no check system. This has not only led to confusion amongst the followers of the calendars but also defamed the system over a period of time.

No two calendars in the country specify uniform time and days of panchang. Hindu religion is ONLY ONE and there can not be any preaching that only one Lord is supreme and not the other Lord. Some of the Seers or Jagadgurus claim that one Lord is superior to the other and vice versa. They should be informed that there should not be any in-fight between them to dilute the unity and authenticity of the Religion in total. I have seen that some of them in order to establish their supremacy, watering the main theme and nature of the Religion, claim and propagate that one Lord is the only supreme Lord and every one has to follow the same. Already this Religion is facing splits and it is certain over a period of time people migrate to other religions where there are less conflicts and complications in the system.

Any preacher should follow a code of conduct and respect the other branches evenly and the Government has to take steps in this direction. All Religious calendars should be published with a consensus duly depicting uniform dates, time and muhurat as per Indian system followed since centuries. This will help protecting people’s interest and create confidence among the followers that their interest is taken care of.

This may not, however, be possible in the existing polluted political environment since an attempt to correct the system may itself take a different turn. At least the religious head should take some steps towards this and help the Hindus to gain confidence that they ARE ONE.

Cartoons/Jokes
In the recent past I have seen many books and magazines with number of cartoons and jokes on Hindu Religious deities and Heroes of the Hindu Origin. Many pictures too were produced using the deities as laughing stocks. Never there is an occasion on this HOLY GLOBE to use the Lords of other religions for such joyous entertainment. Most unfortunate it is, we have good number of Jagadgurus and Seers but what has been done to arrest this type of trend is clearly visible for all of us. The Government obviously tied up with its limitations on this subject and IT MAY NOT DO ANY THING ON ITS OWN TO ARREST THIS TREND. But it is the duty of the Religious heads to take some corrective steps towards this. If the Lords of the Religion are laughed at, what kind of discipline we can inculcate?

I suggest that there should be a platform that all religious heads join and make an attempt to stop all unwanted things first. It is also time to give up in-fights and move towards uniformity and oneness.

Support to the less fortunate
There are less complications in other religions and it can be observed that the FOTUNATE have started extending their helping hand to the LESS FORTUNATE collectively and with a common motive. In our country, though individuals help the less fortunate with all sympathy, nothing much could be seen at a collective point to eradicate the differences between sects. Material support such as distribution of clothes and food items – the base minimum requirements for any one, free distribution of literature and educative texts relating to the promotion and protection of the religious integrity are to be improved upon. There is some kind of weakness, which has to be gradually cut short, and a kind of oneness should be promoted by all concerned.

Rituals

The rituals and offering of oblations are basically from Sanskrit Texts and they are clear in their approach. There is no possibility of any individual interpretation and modification in the text. In the recent past Kumbh – Pushkar was observed for the Holy River Godavari. I have personally visited the banks of the Holy River in Godavari District of AP in Godavari District of AP and in many parts of Maharashtra too. Each one follow his own systems and some cut short the procedure to ten minutes and some draw the same to hours. Ultimately what has to be done is only one – Offering of oblations to the departed souls. Though money pays a vital part but I have noticed poor knowledge amongst priests and perhaps that was the time for them to make money. Interesting it is, during the same time I also visited some parts in Northern India like Pushkar in Rajastan where I found number of priests sitting on the banks but most of them are not aware of any Sanskrit text. They just do their business in their own style.

The purpose of my writing this is to bring some kind of disciplines in the procedure. Though the Government can not do anything due to various reasons, at least the religious heads like the Peethadhipathis should do something and they should formulate a system where upon each priest is tested and an identification mark to the extent of his qualification be given to him permitting him to undertake the job at various places in the country. Thus certain standards are gradually introduced and this creates confidence amongst the persons and their faith is protected as per the original texts of Vedic Sciences.

All that I wish to mention is to make out a REGULATORY BODY covering these aspects so that the faith of the Hindus is properly protected and the systems are followed in the line expected of them. This also will help strengthening of the religious base for the Hindus and the less fortunate in the religion are taken care of.

THE BEST DAYS AHEAD OF YOU – THE GREATNESS OF MASTER –GURU POORNIMA

My dear friends

The best days of the year are just ahead of you. You may be aware, as per the ancient Indian order of life it is said DHYAANA MOOLAM GURONMURTY; POOJAMOOLAM GUROPADAM; MANTRAMOOLAM GUROVAKYAM; MOKSHA MOOLAM GUROKRUPA. It means, for all meditations and centralizing the energy the masters physical features are the roots; for all worships only the Holy Lotus feet of the master; for all the sound commands called as MANTRA the words of the master; and for all elevations only the MASTERS BLESSINGS. Thus the master is considered ALL and he is the only ONE WHO CAN MAKE US TO DO THE THINGS.

Most unfortunate, these days masters are made as a laughing stock and the powerful media – cinemas are mostly responsible for belittling the masters and their capacities. The importance of the master is totally ignored. Something and really something is to be done in this regard lest our next generation has to face the results of the egoistic poisonous seeds which are being planted today by unethical elements for a momentary pleasure.

Had we not cared for what our Guru said in the childhood days quite innocently listening to the teachings and all that WITH A BLIND BELIEF, we might not have reached to this level. The Gnana Netra – the internal eye of wisdom can be opened only with the blessings of Guru. The parents have a very little role in our life – we are all born for a momentary pleasure, but refinement and achievements have all become possible with the blessings of selfless sacrifices of GURU only. PERHAPS YOU WILL AGREE!

Leaving this topic here, I desire to present a wonderful occasion where RAJA YOGA can be achieved quite successfully this year during the time and dates mentioned hereunder.

2nd July 2004 Friday Morning 6.30 to 7.45 – THIS IS THE GURU POORNIMA DAY OF THE YEAR.
30th July Friday 11.00 Am. to 1.00 p.m.; 30th August 2004 Monday Evening time 8.00p.m to 9.30p.m

Friends, I repeat and request you not see a human being in any master. Master can only help us to cross the ocean of sorrow and innocence and he is the ONLY LADDER AVAILABLE FOR OUR SUCCESS. Please do not see the physical shortcomings in the master, only then you will be able to see a mighty man. A person who tries to find faults in Guru can not concentrate to absorb the best qualities from the Master. Thus our own perception and our own inferences remain as great walls for our success. THE MASTER IS ALWAYS A MASTER – WHETHER YOUNG OR OLD; MALE OR FEMALE; HANDSOME OR OTHERWISE; WELL POSITIONED OR NOT.

The great INDIAN ANCIENT CULTURE RESPECTS GURU AND IT IS THE ONLY SECRET OF SUCCESSFUL LIFE.

Let us respect our MASTER – let us remain successful – let us reach the destination fast with HIS blessings.

I shall be back again soon…

Auspicious Time for marriages

Auspicious wedding day selection process has a great significance and effect on the married life of the bride and the bridegroom. The bridal couple can be happy or otherwise too and the time and date of marriage is a vital factor to decide their fate. The Astrological chart analysis of the bride and bridegroom with the directions given in Indian Traditional System and in association with the Indian astrology has profound bearing on the pleasant relationship, good children and a happy old age life.
The Ancient Indian sages found out some ways and means by critically analyzing the astrological aspects and arrived at a conclusion. It is a matter of fact and reality too; some basic academic theory is needed to study the future instead of firing in darkness. Of course, logically it has to be accepted since the sages did not anticipate any reward or remuneration for making out the practicality of theoretical exercise.
The astrological chart analysis gives accurate combination effects on 12 aspects of life, which are the 12 houses in the chart.

Hindu religion is age old and with infinite time of its origin which means one cannot find the starting point or date for this religion. Time has proved and many modern scientists too accepted that it has given the mankind with the right technology and certain clues of future. It gives certain other clues too for any bride or bridegroom to analyze the partner’s characteristics and mutual relationships and all other aspects of human life fulfillment very accurately. Several astrologers have proved even in this modern day that a muhurtha for the wedding has a wonderful effect on their life after analyzing hundreds of married couples.

We have made an attempt here as per the Hindu astrological science the best way to select the muhurtha for the wedding day.

Hindu Sastras have specified around 12 different methods of wedding starting from exchange of rings, … Etc. Unlike in other astrological sciences of other parts of the globe, Indian astrological guidance is quite accurate since the sages found out 27 stars, nine planets and 12 zodiac signs. It is to be noted that there can never be an ideal situation where only 12 kinds of people exists on the earth as is seen in western astrology. Indian astrological guidance differs from person to person; time to time; there upon reaching the accurate conclusion for the future.

To Select specific time (Auspicious time for marriage), first we have to see the stars aspect (A Checklist of table that is compared based on the star power of the bride/bridegroom and the 27 stars like Ashwani, Bharani…. Revathi).

The Auspicious months for marriage are Aries- Mesha-Chaitram, Taurus – Vrishabham -Vyshakm, Gemini -Mithunam-Jyestam, Leo –Simham-Sravanam, Libra - Tula- Ashveejam, Scorpio –Vrischikam-Kartikam-Margasiram, Aquarius – Kumbham- Magham, Pisces – Meenam –Phalgunam. The first one indicate the western name of the zodiac sign, the second one is the name of the zodiac sign as per Indian sciences and the last one is the lunar star month where the fool moon day occurs for the month. The Auspicious days for marriage mostly are Wednesday, Thursday & Friday, though Sunday, Monday are also considered second best. The Auspicious lunar ascending days are the second bright/dark day -Vidiya, the third b/d day- Tadiya, the fifth b/d day - Panchami, the seventh b/d day - Saptami, the tenth b/d day - Dashami, the eleventh b/d day - Ekadasi, the thirteenth b/d day – Triodasi etc.

The Auspicious stars for marriage are Ashwani, Rohini, Mrugasira, Punarvasu, Makha, Uttara, Uttarashada, Uttarabhadra, Hastha, Swathi, Chitta, Anuradha, Moola, Sravanam, Dhanishta, Revathi out of 27 stars.

Shubha Lagnas- Zodiac signs:

Taurus- Vrushabha Lagna, Gemini- Midhuna, Cancer -Karkata, Virgo- Kanya, Libra- Tula, Sagittarius – Dhanus & Pisces- Meenam are considered the best Zodiac signs where marriages are preferred.

To select Zodiac Sign we have to see Lunar Position, then Purification process of eliminating the five poisonous aspects called panchakarahitam, then Zodiac chart with planetary position of the particular day and finally arriving at accurate time called as muhurtam.

In the Zodiac sign chart 7th place should be vacant or aspected by beneficial planets like Jupiter, Mercury or Venus, next only malefic planets should be in 3rd, 6th & 11th positions. Lagna Sagraha Shasta ashtama dwadasa moon should be avoided and Shukra should not be in sixth place. Similarly Kuja (Mars) should not be in 8th place. The Seventh place is the center place for a human being and denotes the conjugal relation place.

Just because the Indian astrological system looks complicated, it can not be avoided for convenient reasons, for the simple reason it has produced perfect results and down to us from centuries. One must salute the great Indian Sages who have done this wonderful research much and much before the telescope/periscope etc are invented. Even today, Indian Pundits-priests sitting at nook and corner of the country accurately say when the lunar/solar eclipse takes place with seconds. The modern scientists with lots of sophisticated equipment now say what the sages said centuries ago is absolute and correct. This becomes a sufficient logical conclusion to accept the theories of the ancient sages.

Different religions have adopted their own methods of selecting the time basing on their experience and knowledge, by and large the Indian astrological guidance appears to be perfect and nearer to the results.

As is seen even in medical sciences, different doctors give different opinion on one particular patient basing on their knowledge and inference/experience, but that does not mean that doctors have lack of knowledge or the medical science is wrong. So to say, different pundits/priests express different opinion on different experiences but that does mean that there is no unified opinion in the science or the science is bad. Some thing can be really done by the Government before it is too late; to consolidate the experts and support the reason oriented sciences of Indian Origin.

My dear friends and like minded persons,

Some one put me a question whether we can live long. My answer was “yes”. The next immediate question which was put to me carried a lot of curiosity to know, “how? Will it be possible to live for a hundred years or more? What has to be done for a long life? and so on” a good number of questions. It was a coincidence, some one in the Forum too asked me as to why I call many as “Chiranjeevi”. I waited for a right opportunity to answer these questions.

San Francisco – situated in California State of USA. As per geographical conditions, the area is like an island and three sides covered by Pacific Ocean and with many such islands in a close circle. There are many things to know and learn there, but just day before yesterday, I stood in front of Golden Gate Bridge. Several thousands of visitors intentionally visit the bridge. This bridge was simply constructed for the convenience of the residents of the City, duly supporting the needs of thousands of residents in other islands. The bridge was planned by an Engineer around 1932 and it was completed by 1939 or so – in a shorter period of just seven years. The specialty of the bridge is that it has only two pillars and iron wire was taken from one end to the other end and the load of the entire bridge is hold by JUST TWO IRON wires from one end to the other.

The diameter of the wire is just 37 inches and the wire is a composition of 27000+ small wires and the total length of the wire used is approxly 130000 kilometers in length. The height of the bridge is 700 ft and two pillars are bearing the entire load of the bridge which is caught by the wire. The depth of the pillar was just 110 ft in the sea. The length of the bridge is 4600 meters and at any given point of time it can hold 10800 cars on it, in its six track road. If wonders are believed to be created by human beings and if I repeatedly say “Nothing is impossible for a Human Being”, it is really a fact and this bridge is a valid proof physically. It is really an amazing man made wonder. How the Engineer could foresee the need of the State and its people of 2006 and a hundred years later too, way back in 1930s – is an eye opener for all of us. Do you agree that the Engineer is still living even after his physical non existence? This is the way people can live long and forever.

I prefer addressing most of you as Chiranjeevi with only one reason that each one of you must live for ever or at least for a good length of time, by virtue of your good deeds and not by virtue of physical existence. Let us support ourselves and the LESS FORTUNATE IN THE SOCIETY for a purposeful coexistence. Our religion should be HUMAN RELIGION.

Some time ago when I gave a mail that we shall start an organization with a motive of up keeping Human Religion – and start with CLEANLINESS. I suggested for observing every month third Sunday as a CLAENING week. As “Charity Begins at Home”, I suggested for starting cleaning each individual houses and identify unused items which are of some help to some one needy in the Society, so that they can be distributed to them. I also suggested for cleaning the nearby environment or a small portion of the road or educate children on the subject of “Cleanliness” with a view that the seed we are planting now, is expected to give good yield to the Country and Countrymen in the long run. Some one suggested the name as “Sudhi International” for this voluntary organization which will be a home for those retired persons who can be of great support with all their experience and expertise; and those youngsters who can volunteer to brighten the image of the Country. Though the name is having similarity with some other organization, but then, the name is a clear indication of the motive of the organization, I feel that this name would do well. The response to my letter was quite amazing when many children came forward to work on the lines suggested. This gave me lot of faith and I can only say – every beginning is always a small one. We do not have to wait for the mass to gather to give life to this program. EVEN ONE PERSON – JUST ONE VOLUNTEER IS ALSO JUST SUFFICIENT FOR US, we will go with our motto. Please come forward to head a locality of your interest for this purpose and when we remain successful in India, we will also help others and ultimately establish UNIVERSAL BROTHERHOOD and ONENESS. Clean Atmosphere, Clean Mind, Clean Environment, and Clean Hearts – are all what are needed for us and we NEED TO COMMIT FOR THE PURPOSE. The ensuing 20th August is the day when we are commencing “Clean” or “Sudhi” work on our own and lead the movement.

How dare we can say that a country is under developed when God gifted all of us – all geographical areas, some – something equally unusual richness. Only the leaders are under developed or self centered thus ultimately leading all of us in different countries to remain and struggle in the Jaws of “Under Development”. Any Country’s progress is on the shoulders of its leaders. If the leaders are clean and committed and if they are physically and mentally “Developed”, the country ever remain as ‘DEVELOPED’.

Instead of blaming the past, let us now onwards work for constructive purposes and rebuild the future and thereupon LIVE LONG. If we work for “Cleanliness” – of every home; every street; every locality; every Village; every town; every city; soon we can do something concretely to our Mother Land and give a good ladder to the next generation while all of us living long as CHIRANJEEVIS.

Jai Hind.

My dear friends and like minded persons
Reg: Sankalpam – Series No 4

Now, the final stage of the series is about the time element of the universe. The text starts as “ Idaaneentana…” where the age of the creator is calculated as 100 years of which 50 years are already over, and the fifty first year is now on wherein, the first month is running in which, the first fortnight and the first day is now progressing, of which, 42 Vighadiyaas are over and we are now in 43rd Vighadiya. The length of this 43rd Vidhadiya is as below.

There are nine Kalpaas in the 43rd Vighadiya and they are: Paardhiva, Anantha, Koorma, Brahma, Varaaha, Swetha Varaha, Pralaya, Padma and Savithri and now we are in SWETHA VARAHA KALPA which is again subdivided as Fourteen Manvantaraas like the below:

Swaayambhuva, Swaaroshicha,Uttama, Taamasa, Raivata, Caakshusha, Vaivaswata,Surya,Agni,Brahma,Rudra,Daksha,Rowcha,Khowchya –Manvantaraas of which we are now in the seventh Manvantaram viz.VAIVASWATHA MANVANTARAM which is subdivided as 10 Avataraas named as below:

The Avataraas of Lord Vishnu as : Mastya, Koorma, Varaaha, Naarasimha, Vaamana, Bhargava, Raama, Balaraama, Krishna and Kalki which is again divided as six Sakaas like Yudhishtira, Vikramarka, Saalivaahana, Vijayaabhinandana, Nagarjuna, Kalkhyaghya of which we are now in SAALIVAAHANA SAKA- the third saka in the range. .

When this is one part of the calculation, the time is subdivided as Mahaa Yugaas and each Mahaa Yug consisting of four Yugaas namely, Krita, Treta, Dwaapara and Kali Yug and of such Mahaayugaas, at present we are in the 28th Mahaayug in which, the following period is already over

Krita Yuga period of 17,28,000 years; Tretaa Yug Period of 12,96,000years ; Dwaapara Yug period of 8,64,000 years and of 4,32,000 years of Kali Yug. We have already passed 5000 years plus a little more in the present Kaliyug, which is said to be the first part of the four parts of the Kali Yug.

The aforementioned is the simple time span – whether we believe it or not – and now remember the geologists confirmed that the arches located on Tirumala Hills is dated back to JUST 150 MILLIONS OF YEARS; when NASA confirmed that the first ever man made bridge between Rameswaram and Sri Lanka dated back to 17.50,000 years matching with the age of Raamayana. And Of course, it is a point of debate and controversy for many of us and we have individually our own beliefs on this point, while some foreigners, besides people of a few Indian origin, say that civilization started elsewhere and they disagree for Indian Mythological History for the reason, they have to disagree, or there might be some other strong reason for all this. I am a lay man; I am just going on the basis on Mahaa Sankalpam of Indian Ancient Sciences only.
While mentioning all this, we also admit in the Sankalpam that the entire universe is filled up with Different usual and unusual bodies which are recycled, and due to some strong reason, we admit we are born and we too admit that the deeds either miss-deeds or good deeds are the resultant efforts of Vak, Pani, Paada, Paayu, Upa, like the words for uttering, hands for deeds, feet for movement, other organs for re-creation and over powered by Twak, Chackshu, Srota, Jiwha, Aghranaam like the five important feeders named as twak – for Skin; Chackshu for Eyes; Srota – Ears; Jiwha for Tongue; Aghranaam for Nose and all deeds are generated out of the creation of the aforementioned sensing organs and make us to do or undo certain deeds due to which knowingly or un-knowingly we commit certain sins and mistakes. :Having admitted all this, we are now expressing our concern and knowledge of the mistake we have committed and expressing where we are, what we are, and how the sins are committed with or without knowledge and to get rid of such sins we salute the great HE and thus with folded hands request HIM TO ELEVATE OUR FORE FATHERS WHO HAVE TAKEN PAINS TO GIVE US A SHAPE OF THE BODY, the GREAT SAGES WHO HAVE GIVEN US AN OPPORTUNITY OF REALISATION AND KNOWLEDGE, and therefore pray for peaceful elevation – or Moksha and taking the names thus, we intend to do some specific act of praying Lord/Kanyaa Daana/ or such sacrifice.
It is just a mind-body presentation.

Just because the text is in Sanskrit, there is no necessity for us to belittle the text and look forward for some other countryman to do research on this and confirm that this is correct or otherwise. Let us not wait to come up for such results to be declared by some one where upon we upkeep our chest up and say our ancestors has done it all. There is no need for us to be proved by some one. We are not doing anything wrong by taking up this Maha Sankalpam, after all this is from our home land and it has been brought from fore fathers.

When We prefer to disrespect our fore fathers, we disown their teachings, we consider that we have nothing to do with all our history and tradition, Of course, what else can be done than waiting for a day of self realization of the traditional richness of our country and greatness of our ancestors, who could able to memorize the history for generations in spite of regional/religious added with multi linguistic clashes and so on--- all along and their struggle for existence all along.

My humble request is to allow this Mahaa Sankalpam to be repeated in all rituals if not by us, at least by the Purohits so that they may not forget. This may help the text to continue till some one make a research and made for next generations to agree or disagree. A danger is already noticed that gradually this is disappearing from the texts of the Vedic Purohits who are forced to reduce all procedures to the liking of the Yajamani. The least what we can do is to follow a good deed if it is not harmful to us; does not put to financial loss; does not cause inconvenience and considered good to remember for future.

My dear friends and like minded persons
Reg: Sankalpam – Series No 3

I am making my intention clear that I desire to complete the topics taken up as soon as possible and in a manner as short as possible without creating a confusion or disorder. This series comes to an end with the next letter though it is a tough job to handle this major issue in four pages of ¼ sizes. Most of the kings and places referred are cross checked with other Puranic Episodes where the material tallies and given us a confidence on the subject.

“Asya Ananta Veeryasya …..” the starting of the sankalpa mentions that the entire universe is based on the Ananta Veerya – the creative force and this is the beginning of the sankalpa where we identify the Mahaa Kaarana Deha – the great HE. Thus the sookshma Deha without any vikaraas enters the womb and there is some basic foundation which is called Adhara Sakti – Centre of the force; and turning into Sri Kurma – Gathering force; Varaaha – Shaping force; Vaishnava-Pervasive force; Ananta –indestructive force; Nag –poise in movement; Sesha– the divisible force, Takshaka – Etching of shapes in space – and they are totally eight in number.

Thus the sookshma deha is encircled with the five elementary forces and overpowered by MAAYA and AHANKAARA where the GAME OF LIFE STARTS WITH EGOISM AND ALL “ISM’S”. Vyakta – Manifestation; Avyakta –Un-manifestation; Mahat – Volume; Ahankaara – Consciousness; Pridhvi – Solid; Upo-Liquid; Tejo – Heat light; Vayu – Gas; Akaasha – Ether. But again the Sookshma Deha has its own Samskaara – culture brought forward and that makes a lot variation of the degree of Ahankaara and Maaya, though every living being is encircled with these making out a GAME.

Then the placement of the body is described to be on a base where there are seven lower layers and seven upper layers such as – Atala, Vitala, Sutala, Talaatala, Rasaatala, Mahaatala, Paataala being the lower layers, which a geologist will be in a better position to explain and Bhu, Bhuva, Suva, Maha, Jana, Stapa, Satya being the upper layers.

Thereafter “Chakravaala …” Chakravaala – the ring of the Horizon; Meru – the Whirlpool of the Rotation; Naala – Spiral Force; Seshu –Forces of Divisibility; Sahasra Phani – Plurality. And the entire Globe lifted by eight elephant like forces named as Iraavata, Pundarika, Vaamana, Kumud, Anjana, Pushpadanta, Saarvabhowma, Supratika and being ruled by eight sacred places like Amaravati, Ashokavati, Ambhovati, Raivati, Sidhavati, Saadhya vati, Gandharvavati, and Alakaavati and the directional forces named as Indra – East; Agni –South East; Yama – South; Niruta- South West; Varuna – West; Vaayu – North West; Kubera – North; Ishana-North East.
It is further described as possessing seven natural majestic mountains, and five sub regional mountains such as Mahendra, Malaya, Saahyasakti, Himavat, Rukshavat, Vindhya, Paariyaatra and others being Matanga, Hiranyasrunga, Maalyavat, Kishkindha, Rushyasrungaaghya.

A mention is also made about the Majestic Kings as described in the number of sixteen such as Raama, Sibi, Ranti, Gaya, Anga, Suhota, Prudhu, Mandhatru, Yaayati, Marut, Dileepa, Bharat, Ambarisha, Sasibindu, Bhageeratha, Parasuraama and another the Great Kings/Emperors named as Kaarta Veerya, Sagara, Puroorava, Purukusta, Nala, Harischandra. Later the Geographical area and in the later part, the time element is described. Astrology, astronomy are a part of this subject. This means, we are identifying ourselves and our placements duly remembering our position in the geographical area, the time element of the universe, the planetary movement, and what not just before entering into the medicated theories for a comfortable life in the form of Shodasopachara Poojaas or worship of Lord. The great sages of Indian Origin introduced these worshiping methods in a most intelligent manner whereupon we worship ourselves for a comfortable and healthy life and always on a day to day basis recollect where we are and what we are. It is a form of self discipline.

Universal peace and respect to each others on a basis of LIVE AND LET LIVE policy has been an in-built system of the worship in India as per HINDU religious system.

Further described as possessing Ten Dense forests namely DANDAKA, VINDHYAKA, CHAMPAKA, BADARIKA, NAHUSHA, NAIMISHA, DWAITHA, GUHA, DEVADAARU, SWETHAKHYA.

We have taken out the ancient texts and basing on certain descriptions made there in started locating the forests, mountains, islands, rivers and kingdoms so that a comprehensive picture of the land of yester years be brought to the readers just for the purpose of reading and knowing what was all this.

Certain latest evidences through the pictures taken by the Satellite too confirm certain data aforementioned. By and large, I desire to make this clear that none of the People of Indian Origin either grabbed the land of others nor they had such intentions. We may cover all this under a shadow of peace loving nature or repent for a while for lack of unity in the past, at present and mostly likely in the future too.

The recent invasion of Angkor Vot Shri Maha Vishnu Temple in Cambodia thus speaks of some relevance to the Kambhoja of yester years. Now we have taken the global map and started the patch work and trying our best whether we can succeed in matching the area on this basis. Let us See what could be possible done by us in this regard.

Truthfully respecting the Lotus Feet of Great Grand Father Shri Krishna Dwipaayan Veda Vyas, The Great Sage Agasya, Holy Maharishi Sandeepani and Vamsa Rishi Gowthama,

My dear friends and like minded persons
Sankalpam-series No 1
This is further to the Tarpan topic which I was discussing some time ago. I have seen people forgetting the Sankalpa Vidhi and creating a short cut of their own. In Management Sciences, when I was teaching, I used to say the student the shortest method of achieving success by reducing the entire subject to just WHAT TO DO, WHEN TO DO AND HOW TO DO. What to do relates to the Goal setting, when to do relate to time setting and how to do relates to approach setting. If these three are properly knitted and planned, perhaps the destination becomes easy to reach. The Sankalpam is equated to WHAT TO DO, in other words we are making our mind clear when we start doing something.

I request readers to take opportunity of reading my book Lakshmi Saadhana-9 where the entire Mahaa Sankalpa is given along with the meaning in English. In the Sankalpam, the geographical area of our Holy Country, the time span of the space, the planetary position, the Holy Rivers, the Mountains, the forests what not….which gives a total picture of what we are and we were. In the normal material life, we take lot of care of our own house and see others do not trespass, and this we do every day almost, but in the case of our Mother land we have our least priority for it. Is it not a painful matter, please examine.

Back to the subject, in the Sankalpam, at one stage we express our desire to the Lord …..Ganga Vaalukaabhi Saptarishi Mandala Paryantam…… to retain our fore fathers to the extent of taking the sand of the Ganges and arranging it bit by bit covering the entire saptarishi mandalam and come back to where we stand, such time – and multiply the same by a thousand and such other time to remove the sand bits again in the similar fashion ….THIS MUCH OF TIME span is requested for retaining the great souls of our departed fore fathers in the Brahma Loka. This means we are praying Lord for retaining the departed souls of the fore fathers more or less permanently – Saaswatha – in the Brahma Loka. Interestingly, another request followed by this, Tilai Surya Mandala Paryantam….. means the same process for Sea Same Seeds for circling the Sowra Mandalam; Yavai Graha Mandala Paryantam………… means the same process for Wheat Grains to circle the entire planets; Vrusha Lomaabhi Nakshatra Mandala Paryantam…… means the same process for the hair bits on the tail of the oxen to circle the entire Nakshatra Mandal. I do not know whether our sophisticated computers will be able to calculate the time span for all this………this is the JUST TIME SPAN ----looks amazing, but it is a fact in the sankalpa vidhi vidhaan we are praying the Lord to keep our fore fathers in the Brahma Loka.

What a wonderful and meaningful prayer this is! When once we come to know the meaning of this, can any one afford to ignore this prayer? This is being done in some parts of the country at the time of Wedding, that too, if the bridegroom party has some patience; the priest knows this; the caterer is not in a hurry; sufficient time gap is available before the Murat; the video grapher has no problem for this, apart from all this if it is not a bore some exercise for both bride and bridegroom, etc etc………

Now, let us know how many of us feel that we are missing this wonderful and most wonderful prayer and what we could just simply do as a token of gratitude. Though in some cases, I have seen people murmuring to know the grand fathers name when in times of need, leave alone great grand father. There are instances I have noticed most painfully where even good scholars try to recollect the Rishis of their Gothra. Are we running for a culture where we may have to observe Grand Fathers day/Fathers day/Mothers day etc when we are unable to recollect who they are actually? Now it is all up to all of us to analyze the situation and arrest the great damage to the system we are intentionally or otherwise causing. A Stitch in time saves nine…………………………………………………………….

My dear friends and like minded persons
I have been asked by a like minded person to write about Sagunoopaasana. I have been watching the mails and I do not know where exactly I stand to write anything on this subject before the core intellectuals of the group. Any way, as a student, I may have to place before you all what I could understand about the Sagunoo Paasana.

I have seen a mail in the group that everything is SAGUNOOPAASANA, either in the form of idol worship or in the form of prayers or other methods adopted by other religions. It is a fact. There are stages of worship. For example, I did not realize the methods of worship at my childhood time; I was only curiously listening to the stories of Mahaa Bharat and Ramaayan. Bhima and Ravana thrilled me with all their doings in those episodes. Perhaps I would have run away from the story teller had he thought of teaching me Dwaitha and Adwaitha etc at that stage. The stage slightly modified, I started focusing on other brave deeds of Lord Krishna and Lord Hanumaan.

I was imagining them in my dreams and there were some photographs then and those pictures remained in my memory as and when I thought of them. At that time, I liked only black granite Moorthis in the temple and not accepting marble stoned one, at some other stage, I did not accept the posture of Goddess Durga in Assam as the way the saree was tied to her was not appealing to the one in the sourthern part of India.

There was another stage, I do not know whether it is a modified one or not, the soomkshaartha of Ramaayana – Viswa Mithra – Viswa = Universe, Mithra = Friend, i.e. Viswamithra – Varuna (The Holy God of Rain) is the media between Lord Rama – Neela Megha Shyaama to touch the Halya – the desert Land, to make it as Ahalya – a verdure fertile land. Had I not accepted and imagined Lord Hanuman in my earlier days, perhaps I would not have realized the meaning of Raamayana in a different form – totally different from the Story. The Great Sages of Hindu Religion have built up everything in the form of Sagunopasana only and unless one crosses the stages of Sagunopaasana, he will not realize what NIRGUNA PARA BRAHMA TATVAM is.

By and large, I believe Sagunoopaasana is the BASIC STEPPING STONE for attaining advancement. I go little beyond, even these letters of expression are of SAGUNOPAASANA, letter like A B C D – are the forms of the sounds and they are brought a shape by different people in different languages acceptable to them. They are called MAATHRUKAAS. I can not read Kashmiri language even if the same A B C D is written in that language.

This means, we accept language, letters, postures, symbols, idols to which our mind is tuned. The greatness of Hindu Religion is that we accept Lord in all forms – a serpent is worshipped in Tamilnadu so also in Meghalaya. We respect all diversities. Take for example – Lord Shiva Family – Lion and Nandi are enemies; snake and peacock are enemies; and they all coexist.

To sum up, SAGUNOOPPASANA is the stepping stone for Nirgunoopaasana. If a child is not nursed/educated properly at the time of when he needs the support, how any one can expect him to come up and start walking and earning bread of himself. Nirgunoopaasana is an extreme later stage like a Doctoral level which can not be thought of at the stage of 1st Standard. Idol worship is therefore essential for a code of conduct and a kind of discipline.

The idols suggested by the Great Rishis are also not simple stones; they have some meaning and some basic value. This has to be remembered, the HINDU RELIGION/GREAT RISHIS OF INDIAN ORIGIN created an atmosphere – an in built atmosphere for a disciplined and healthy life through varieties of worship and varieties of idols. It is advisable to read my topic earlier pasted on “The Chemistry and Mathematics of Shiv Linga and Sri Chakra”.

As I expressed myself as a student, this is what I learned and I have no hesitation to accept any modification or refined application of the principle.

Tarpana

Tarpana (Libations of water, milk etc)
By Dr. Robert E. Svoboda
There are no permanent physical or mental cure for constitutional weaknesses (constitution as defined by Ayurveda, the science of life and health). Once you have identified yourself as a V, P, or K type, or a combination of two of these, you are stuck with that constitution, and all its benefits and defects, until you die. [Note: V, P and K refer to Vata, Pitta and Kapha.] There are only two ways to escape. One way to escape is open to you if you are a spiritual aspirant, and follow strict spiritual disciplines. Under such controlled conditions there will be little occasion for your constitution to display itself. It will not change, but it will not disturb you. The other way involves the ancient ritual of Tarpana. Related to the Sanskrit word Trpti, which means satiation or satisfaction, Tarpana is a process of gratifying your ancestors. There is a Law of Nature known as Bija Vrksha Nyaya: the Law of Seed and Tree. Your seeds are your genes and chromosomes, the essence of your parents' germ plasm (plasma). You are the tree, the product of those seeds. Half your genes come from one parent, and half from the other. No matter how far you try to distance yourself from your parents, in space, time, or interaction, your genes and their genes are identical, and resonate with one another. Your parents' emotions are bound to resonate with your emotions, no matter how far distant you may be from them, because of this fundamental identity. This is why a certain telepathic communication sometimes exists between parent and child. Because your parents' genes originated in your grandparents, your emotions will be influenced by their emotions, and by the emotions of your great-grandparents, and so on, back at least seven generations. Even though most of your ancestors are already dead the subtle effects of their personalities remain in your geneticenvironment and continue to affect you. Homeopathic medicine discusses miasmas, inherited weaknesses that are passed down from generation to generation in a family. These inherited weaknesses are referred to in Sanskrit as Kutumba Dosha (faults in the family). Ayurvedic rejuvenation works on the physical manifestations of these faults. Tarpana works more deeply, reducing the emotional charges, which have accumulated in you as a result of the activities of your forebears. Suppose one of your ancestors was overly fond of eating, so fond that he or she fantasized about food all day long. All cravings are forms of energy, which are broadcast into the Ether (space) with every thought. Some of these thoughts will be rational and sensible, but many will be obsessive. You, who are permanently tuned to your ancestors' wavelengths, automatically receive these subtle broadcasts, which will induce you to become obsessive about food if you are susceptible to them. Anyone who is really obsessive about food is likely to be thinking of food at the moment of death. This final broadcast message is more powerful than all those which went before, because it is transmitted with all the anguish of an unfillable desire. Because of the power behind this desire, and the fact that the individual whose rational mind could partly negate it no longer exists, this last wish affects you much more powerfully than any living wishes can. [Note: Compare Bhagavad Gita, Ch. 8, Verse 13: "Uttering the monosyllable Om- the Brahman (God) - and remembering Me, he who departs thus, leaving the body, attains to the supreme goal." Also Gita, Ch. 8, Verse 10: "At the time of death, with unshaken mind, endowed with devotion and by the power of Yoga, fixing the whole life-breath in the middle of the two eyebrows, he reaches that resplendent Supreme Person."] Tarpana enables you to negate these desires. Once they are gone, the pressure on your genes to make you obsessive about food eases, and your diet and habits can induce other of your genes to begin to function, which changes your emotional climate. As long as these unseen influences continue to affect you, no amount of diet or routine can ever eliminate them because they do not strike at the source. 99% of human and chimpanzee genes are identical; the differences between the two species occur because some genes are expressed more than others. You are your own creator, ceaselessly creating yourself from your own genes with the help of your physical and mental food and habits. The traditional ritual of Tarpana is complex, but its essence is simple. It is much like the All Soul's tradition, when people visit their relatives in the cemetery. In preparation, consider what one food item your parent or grandparent was fondest of. May be it is the apple strudel your grandmother used to bake or the ale your father used to drink.

That food will act as a vehicle for your emotion. Sit comfortably facing south and visualize your dead ancestors, one by one, as far back as you can remember. Make each one sit in front of you. Telling them you want to help release them from any residual earthly desires they might have, offer them a spoonful of water, a spoonful of milk, and a spoonful of sesame seeds, preferably the black variety. These offerings are the same for everyone.
Then offer a little of the special item, with the heartfelt wish that this will satisfy any residual cravings and allow that individual, wherever he or she is, to continue with their own progression towards greater integration and clarity. You then request them to return whence they came, and feed the food you have offered to an animal, or put it into a river or the ocean. It is good to repeat this annually, preferably on the same New Moon Day each year.
The best days for Tarpana are New Moon Days, especially those which fall in September (Pitr Paksha). You need not even believe in reincarnation, or even life after death, to perform Tarpana. Your parents and grandparents are still alive inside you, in your genes. You are simply projecting a part of your personality, contacting it, and requesting it to be pleased with you and to relinquish any inappropriate influence it may have over you. This visualization releases you from any unhealthy psychological habits you may have as a result of the influence of these previous beings who also shared your genes, and of the images you have of those beings. Tarpana is especially important for ancestors you knew personally. If you loved them, you show them your love in the only way remaining to you, by remembering them and offering part of yourself to them as a token of your love. If your relationship with them was marred by negative emotions, Tarpana allows you to forgive them, to heal the relationship by sacrificing your negativity and offering them the healing power of your love. Thankfulness for the genes which have given you life, and forgiveness for those genes which have limited your existence, transport the sacrifice to its intended target. If you are convinced that this procedure can actually help eliminate any negativity remaining between you and the image you hold of your ancestor, it will. Faith is essential for it to work; you must make your offering with complete sincerity. Faith can truly make you whole. Faith can make our society whole as well. Tarpana is important to all of us who have forgotten our roots. It creates the bond which should exist between our ancestors and us. Hindu tradition regards Tarpana as a duty, which every child must perform for its parents. When we accept this responsibility we relinquish forgetfulness. Tarpana is an act of remembrance, which solidifies the linkbetween the generations. By opening ourselves to our ancestral influences and forgiving our forebears their imperfections, we open ourselves to their accumulated wisdom, which can cement our culture together.============ ========= ========= ======URL -http://www.hinduism.co.za/tarpana.htm The site www.hinduism.co.za is a storehouse of explanations aboutHinduism and its many tenets, rituals and traditions...

- 2 -Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?
- 3 -Introduction
Hinduism is not a religion but a way of life. Unlike other religions, Hindu dharma has many specialties. This is not known as a religion, it is known as the dharma; Sanaathana Dharma. Sanaathana means, according to Bhagavath Geetha, which cannot be destroyed by fire, weapons, water, air, and which is present in all living and non living being.
Dharma means, the way of life which is the ‘total of all aachaaraas or customs and rituals’.
Sanaathana Dharma has its foundation on scientific spirituality. In the entire ancient Hindu literature we can see that science and spirituality are integrated. It is mentioned in the 40th chapter of the Yajurveda known as Eesaavaasya Upanishad that use scientific knowledge for solving problems in our life and use the spiritual knowledge for attaining immortality through philosophical outlook.
Remember that in each and every aachaaraa there will be a component of spirituality in it. Without spirituality, nothing exists in Sanaathana dharma. Generally everyone bear a wrong impression that this spirituality is religion. Spirituality is different in Hindu dharma. Here the question of religion does not exist at all, because Hindu dharma was not created by an individual, prophet or an incarnation. Spirituality is a part of every Hindu custom in the normal life of a Hindu.
Aachaaraas or the family customs are to be followed based on their merits available from the self experience; you need not blindly follow a teacher or someone who gives advice without reasoning. All these aachaaraas are mentioned for the prosperity of the human beings and it should be the prime focus for practicing the Hindu aachaaraas.
Achaaryaath paadam aadatthepaadam sishya swamedhayaapaadam sa brahmachaaribhyasesham kaala kramena cha
This is an important advice given in smruthies. It means a person can get only one quarter of knowledge from Achaarya - the teacher, another quarter by analyzing self, one quarter by discussing with others and the last quarter during the process of living by method addition, deletion, correction, and modification of already known aachaaraas or new aachaaraas.
Aachaaraath labhathe hi ayu:aachaaraath dhanamakshayamaachaaraath labhathe suprajaa:aachaaro ahanthya lakshanam
Aachaaraas are followed for the psychological and physiological health and long life; Aachaaraas are followed for prosperity and wealth; Aachaaraas are followed for strong family and social bondage and following the Aachaaraas give a fine personality, dharmic outlook and vision, says our dharmasaastra.
In India everyone followed Aachaaraas for the above mentioned psychological, physiological, family relation, social benefits and national integration based benefits. It is your right and duty to understand scientifically, rationally and logically the meaning of each and every Aachaaraas and follow the same in your life systematically.
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?-
4 -1. Why do we light a lamp?
In almost every Indian home a lamp is lit daily before the altar of the Lord. In some houses it is lit at dawn, in some, twice a day – at dawn and dusk – and in a few it is maintained continuously - Akhanda Deepa. All auspicious functions commence with the lighting of the lamp, which is often maintained right through the occasion.Light symbolizes knowledge, and darkness - ignorance. The Lord is the "Knowledge Principle" (Chaitanya) who is the source, the enlivener and the illuminator of all knowledge. Hence light is worshiped as the Lord himself.Knowledge removes ignorance just as light removes darkness. Also knowledge is a lasting inner wealth by which all outer achievement can be accomplished. Hence we light the lamp to bow down to knowledge as the greatest of all forms of wealth. Why not light a bulb or tube light? That too would remove darkness. But the traditional oil lamp has a further spiritual significance. The oil or ghee in the lamp symbolizes our vaasanas or negative tendencies and the wick, the ego. When lit by spiritual knowledge, the vaasanas get slowly exhausted and the ego too finally perishes. The flame of a lamp always burns upwards. Similarly we should acquire such knowledge as to take us towards higher ideals.Whilst lighting the lamp we thus pray:Deepajyothi parabrahmaDeepa sarva tamopahahaDeepena saadhyate saramSandhyaa deepo namostuteI prostrate to the dawn/dusk lamp; whose light is the Knowledge Principle (the Supreme Lord), which removes the darkness of ignorance and by which all can be achieved in life.
2. Why do we have a prayer room?
Most Indian homes have a prayer room or altar. A lamp is lit and the Lord worshipped each day. Other spiritual practices like japa - repetition of the Lord’s name, meditation, paaraayana - reading of the scriptures, prayers, and devotional singing etc are also done here. Special worship is done on auspicious occasions like birthdays, anniversaries, festivals and the like. Each member of the family - young or old - communes with and worships the Divine here. The Lord is the entire creation. He is therefore the true owner of the house we live in too. The prayer room is the Master room of the house. We are the earthly occupants of His property. This notion rids us of false pride and possessiveness. The ideal attitude to take is to regard the Lord as the true owner of our homes and us as caretakers of His home. But if that is rather difficult, we could at least think of Him as a very welcome guest. Just as we would house an important guest in the best comfort, so too we felicitate the Lord’s presence in our homes by having a prayer room or altar, which is, at all times, kept clean and well-decorated.Also the Lord is all pervading. To remind us that He resides in our homes with us, we have prayer rooms. Without the grace of the Lord, no task can be successfully or easily accomplished. We invoke His grace by communing with Him in the prayer room each day and on special occasions.
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?-
3 -Each room in a house is dedicated to a specific function like the bedroom for resting, the drawing room to receive guests, the kitchen for cooking etc. The furniture, decor and the atmosphere of each room are made conducive to the purpose it serves. So too for the purpose of meditation, worship and prayer, we should have a conducive atmosphere - hence the need for a prayer room.Sacred thoughts and sound vibrations pervade the place and influence the minds of those who spend time there. Spiritual thoughts and vibrations accumulated through regular meditation, worship and chanting done there pervade the prayer room. Even when we are tired or agitated, by just sitting in the prayer room for a while, we feel calm, rejuvenated and spiritually uplifted.
4. Why do we do Namaste?
Indians greet each other with namaste. The two palms are placed together in front of the chest and the head bows whilst saying the word namaste. This greeting is for all - people younger than us, of our own age, those older than friends, even strangers and us.There are five forms of formal traditional greeting enjoined in the shaastras of which namaskaram is one. This is understood as prostration but it actually refers to paying homage as we do today when we greet each other with a namaste.Namaste could be just a casual or formal greeting, a cultural convention or an act of worship. However there is much more to it than meets the eye. In Sanskrit namah + te = namaste. It means - I bow to you - my greetings, salutations or prostration to you. Namaha can also be literally interpreted as "na ma" (not mine). It has a spiritual significance of negating or reducing one’s ego in the presence of another. The real meeting between people is the meeting of their minds. When we greet another, we do so with namaste, which means, "may our minds meet," indicated by the folded palms placed before the chest. The bowing down of the head is a gracious form of extending friendship in love and humilityThe spiritual meaning is even deeper. The life force, the divinity, the Self or the Lord in me is the same in all. Recognizing this oneness with the meeting of the palms, we salute with head bowed the Divinity in the person we meet. That is why sometimes, we close our eyes as we do namaste to a revered person or the Lord – as if to look within. The gesture is often accompanied by words like "Ram Ram,” "Jai Shri Krishna", "Namo Narayana", "Jai Siya Ram", "Om Shanti" etc - indicating the recognition of this divinity. When we know this significance, our greeting does not remain just a superficial gesture or word but paves the way for a deeper communion with another in an atmosphere of love and respect.
5 Why do we prostrate before parents and elders?
Indians prostrate before their parents, elders, teachers and noble souls by touching their feet. The elder in turn blesses us by placing his or her hand on or over our heads. Prostration is done daily, when we meet elders and particularly on important occasions like the beginning of a new task, birthdays, festivals etc. In certain traditional circles, prostration is accompanied by abhivaadana, which serves to introduce one-self, announce one’s family and social stature.
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?-
6 -Man stands on his feet. Touching the feet in prostration is a sign of respect for the age, maturity, nobility and divinity that our elders personify. It symbolizes our recognition of their selfless love for us and the sacrifices they have done for our welfare. It is a way of humbly acknowledging the greatness of another. This tradition reflects the strong family ties, which has been one of India’s enduring strengths. The good wishes (Sankalpa) and blessings (aashirvaada) of elders are highly valued in India. We prostrate to seek them. Good thoughts create positive vibrations. Good wishes springing from a heart full of love, divinity and nobility have a tremendous strength. When we prostrate with humility and respect, we invoke the good wishes and blessings of elders, which flow in the form of positive energy to envelop us. This is why the posture assumed whether it is in the standing or prone position, enables the entire body to receive the energy thus received. The different forms of showing respect are:
Pratuthana:Rising to welcome a person.
Namaskaara:Paying homage in the form of namaste
Upasangrahan:Touching the feet of elders or teachers.
Shaashtaanga:Prostrating fully with the feet, knees, stomach, chest, forehead and arms touching the ground in front of the elder.
Pratyabivaadana:Returning a greeting.Rules are prescribed in our scriptures as to who should prostrate to whom. Wealth, family name, age, moral strength and spiritual knowledge in ascending order of importance qualified men to receive respect.
This is why a king though the ruler of the land, would prostrate before a spiritual master. Epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata have many stories highlighting this aspect.
7 Why do we wear marks (tilak, pottu and the like) on the forehead? The tilak or pottu invokes a feeling of sanctity in the wearer and others. It is recognized as a religious mark. Its form and colour vary according to one’s caste, religious sect or the form of the Lord worshipped. In earlier times, the four castes (based on varna or colour) - Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya and Sudra - applied marks differently. The brahmin applied a white chandan mark signifying purity, as his profession was of a priestly or academic nature. The kshatriya applied a red kumkum mark signifying valour as he belonged to warrior races. The vaishya wore a yellow kesar or turmeric mark signifying prosperity as he was a businessman or trader devoted to creation of wealth. The sudra applied a black bhasma, kasturi or charcoal mark signifying service as he supported the work of the other three divisions. Also Vishnu worshippers apply a chandan tilak of the shape of "U,” Shiva worshippers a tripundra of bhasma, Devi worshippers a red dot of kumkum and so on).The tilak cover the spot between the eyebrows, which is the seat of memory and thinking.
It is known as the Aajna Chakra in the language of Yoga.
tilak is applied with the prayer - "May I remember the Lord. May this pious feeling pervade all my activities. May I be righteous in my deeds.” Even when we temporarily forget this prayerful attitude the mark on another reminds us of our resolve. The tilak is thus a blessing of the Lord and a protection against wrong tendencies and forces. The entire body emanates energy in the form of electromagnetic waves - the forehead and the subtle spot between the eyebrows especially so. That is why worry generates heat.
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?-
7 -causes a headache.
The tilak and pottu cools the forehead, protects us and prevents energy loss. Sometimes the entire forehead is covered with chandan or bhasma. Using plastic reusable "stick bindis" is not very beneficial, even though it serves the purpose of decoration.6. Why do we not touch papers, books and people with the feet?To Indians, knowledge is sacred and divine. So it must be given respect at all times. Nowadays we separate subjects as sacred and secular. But in ancient India every subject - academic or spiritual - was considered divine and taught by the guru in the gurukula. The custom of not stepping on educational tools is a frequent reminder of the high position accorded to knowledge in Indian culture. From an early age, this wisdom fosters in us a deep reverence for books and education. This is also the reason why we worship books, vehicles and instruments once a year on Saraswathi Pooja or Ayudha Pooja day, dedicated to the Goddess of Learning. In fact, each day before starting our studies, we pray:Saraswati namasthubhyam Varade kaama roopini Vidyaarambham karishyaami Sidhirbhavatu me sadaaO Goddess Saraswati, the giver of Boons and fulfiller of wishes, I prostrate to You before starting my studies. May you always fulfill me?
7. To touch another with the feet is considered an act of misdemeanor.
Why is this so?Man is regarded as the most beautiful, living breathing temple of the Lord! Therefore touching another with the feet is akin to disrespecting the divinity within him or her. This calls for an immediate apology, which is offered with reverence and humility.8. Why do we apply the holy ash?The ash of any burnt object is not regarded as holy ash. Bhasma (the holy ash) is the ash from the homa (sacrificial fire) where special wood along with ghee and other herbs is offered as worship of the Lord. Or the deity is worshipped by pouring ash as abhisheka and is then distributed as bhasma.Bhasma is generally applied on the forehead. Some apply it on certain parts of the body like the upper arms, chest etc. Some ascetics rub it all over the body. Many consume a pinch of it each time they receive it.The word bhasma means, "that by which our sins are destroyed and the Lord is remembered.” Bha implied bhartsanam ("to destroy") and sma implies smaranam ("to remember"). The application of bhasma therefore signifies destruction of the evil and remembrance of the divine. Bhasma is called vibhuti (which means "glory") as it gives glory to one who applies it and raksha (which means a source of protection) as it protects the wearer from ill health and evil, by purifying him or her.

8 -Homa (offering of oblations into the fire with sacred chants) signifies the offering or surrender of the ego and egocentric desires into the flame of knowledge or a noble and selfless cause. The consequent ash signifies the purity of the mind, which results from such actions. Also the fire of knowledge burns the oblation and wood signifying ignorance and inertia respectively. The ash we apply indicates that we should burn false identification with the body and become free of the limitations of birth and death. This is not to be misconstrued as a morose reminder of death but as a powerful pointer towards the fact that time and tide wait for none.Bhasma is specially associated with Lord Shiva who applies it all over His body. Shiva devotes apply bhasma as a tripundra. When applied with a red spot at the center, the mark symbolizes Shiva-Shakti (the unity of energy and matter that creates the entire seen and unseen universe).

9. Why do offer food to the Lord before eating it?
Indians make an offering of food to the Lord and later partake of it as prasaada - a holy gift from the Lord. In our daily ritualistic worship (pooja) too we offer naivedyam (food) to the Lord. The Lord is omnipotent and omniscient. Man is a part, while the Lord is the totality. All that we do is by His strength and knowledge alone. Hence what we receive in life as a result of our actions is really His alone. We acknowledge this through the act of offering food to Him. This is exemplified by the Hindi words "tera tujko arpan"– I offer what is Yours to You. Thereafter it is akin to His gift to us, graced by His divine touch.Knowing this, our entire attitude to food and the act of eating changes. The food offered will naturally be pure and the best. We share what we get with others before consuming it. We do not demand, complain or criticise the quality of the food we get. We eat it with cheerful acceptance (prasaada buddhi). Before we partake of our daily meals we first sprinkle water around the plate as an act of purification. Five morsels of food are placed on the side of the plate acknowledging the debt owed by us to the Divine forces (devta runa) for their benign grace and protection, our ancestors (pitru runa) for giving us their lineage and a family culture, the sages (rishi runa) as our religion and culture have been "realised", aintained and handed down to us by them, our fellow beings (manushya runa) who constitute society without the support of which we could not live as we do and other living beings (bhuta runa) for serving us selflessly.Thereafter the Lord, the life force, who is also within us as the five life-giving physiological functions, is offered the food. This is done with the chant praanaaya swaahaa, apaanaaya swaahaa, vyaanaaya swaahaa, udanaya swahaa, samanaaya swahaa .... brahmane swaahaa
After offering the food thus, it is eaten as prasaada - blessed food.
10. Why do we fast?
Most devout Indians fast regularly or on special occasions like festivals. On such days they do not eat at all, eat once or make do with fruits or a special diet of simple food.Fasting in Sanskrit is called upavaasa. Upa means "near" + vaasa means "to stay". Upavaasa therefore means staying near (the Lord), meaning the attainment of close mental proximity with the Lord. Then what has upavaasa to do with food?A lot of our time and energy is spent in procuring food items, preparing, cooking, eating and digesting food. Certain food types make our minds dull and agitated. Hence on certain days man decides to save time and conserve his energy by eating either simple, light food or totally abstaining from eating so that his mind becomes alert and pure. The mind, otherwise pre-occupied by the thought of food, now entertains noble thoughts and stays with the Lord. Since it is a self-imposed form of discipline it is usually adhered to with joyAlso every system needs a break and an overhaul to work at its best. Rest and a change of diet during fasting is very good for the digestive system and the entire body. The more you indulge the senses, the more they make their demands. Fasting helps us to cultivate control over our senses, sublimate our desires and guide our minds to be poised and at peace.Fasting should not make us weak, irritable or create an urge to indulge later. This happens when there is no noble goal behind fasting. The Bhagavad-Gita urges us to eat appropriately - neither too less nor too much - yukta-aahaara and to eat simple, pure and healthy food (a saatvik diet) even when not fasting.11. Why do we do pradakshina (circumambulate)? We cannot draw a circle without a center point. The Lord is the center, source and essence of our lives. Recognizing Him as the focal point in our lives, we go about doing our daily chores. This is the significance of pradakshina. Also every point on the circumference of a circle is equidistant from the center. This means that wherever or whoever we may be, we are equally close to the Lord. His grace flows towards us without partiality.12. Why is pradakshina done only in a clockwise manner? The reason is not, as a person said, to avoid a traffic jam! As we do pradakshina, the Lord is always on our right. In India the right side symbolizes auspiciousness. So as we circumambulate the sanctum sanctorum we remind ourselves to lead an auspicious life of righteousness, with the Lord who is the indispensable source of help and strength, as our guide - the "right hand".
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?- 10 -Indian scriptures enjoin - matrudevo bhava, pitrudevo bhava, acharyadevo bhava.
May you consider your parents and teachers as you would the Lord. With this in mind we also do pradakshina around our parents and divine personages. After the completion of traditional worship (pooja), we customarily do pradakshina around ourselves. In this way we recognize and remember the supreme divinity within us, which alone is idolized in the form of the Lord that we worship outside.
13. Why do we regard trees and plants as sacred?
The Lord, the life in us, pervades all living beings, be they plants or animals. Hence, they are all regarded as sacred. Human life on earth depends on plants and trees. They give us the vital factors that make life possible on earth: food, oxygen, clothing, shelter, medicines etc.Hence, in India, we are taught to regard trees and plants as sacred. Indians scriptures tell us to plant ten trees if, for any reason, we have to cut one. We are advised to use parts of trees and plants only as much as is needed for food, fuel, shelter etc. we are also urged to apologies to a plant or tree before cutting it to avoid incurring a specific sin named soona.Certain trees and plants like tulasi, peepal etc., which have tremendous beneficial qualities, are worshipped till today. It is believed that divine beings manifest as trees and plants, and many people worship them to fulfill their desires or to please the Lord.
14. Why do we ring the bell in a temple? Is it to wake up the Lord?
But the Lord never sleeps. Is it to let the Lord know we have come? He does not need to be told, as He is all knowing. Is it a form of seeking permission to enter His precinct? It is a homecoming and therefore entry needs no permission. The Lord welcomes us at all times. Then why do we ring the bell? The ringing of the bell produces what is regarded as an auspicious sound. It produces the sound Om, the universal name of the Lord. There should be auspiciousness within and without, to gain the vision of the Lord who is all-auspiciousness.Even while doing the ritualistic aarati, we ring the bell. It is sometimes accompanied by the auspicious sounds of the conch and other musical instruments. An added significance of ringing the bell, conch and other instruments is that they help drowned any inauspicious or irrelevant noises and comments that might disturb or distract the worshippers in their devotional ardour, concentration and inner peace. As we start the daily ritualistic worship (pooja) we ring the bell, chanting:Aagamaarthamtu devaanaam gamanaarthamtu rakshasaam Kurve ghantaaravam tatra devataahvaahna lakshanamI ring this bell indicating the invocation of divinity, So that virtuous and noble forces enter (my home and heart); and the demonic and evil forces from within and without, depart.
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?-15. Why do we worship the kalasha?First of all what is a kalasha?
A brass, mud or copper pot is filled with water. Mango leaves are placed in the mouth of the pot and a coconut is placed over it. A red or white thread is tied around its neck or sometimes all around it in a intricate diamond-shaped pattern. The pot may be decorated wit designs. Such a pot is known as a kalasha. When the pot is filled with water or rice, it is known as purnakumbha representing the inert body which when filled with the divine life force gains the power to do all the wonderful things that makes life what it is.A kalasha is placed with due rituals on all-important occasions like the traditional house warming (grihapravesa), wedding, daily worship etc. It is placed near the entrance as a sign of welcome. It is also used in a traditional manner while receiving holy personages. Why do we worship the kalasha? Before the creation came into being, Lord Vishnu was reclining on His snake-bed in the milky ocean. From His navel emerged a lotus from which appeared Lord Brahma, the creator, who thereafter created this world. The water in the kalasha symbolizes the primordial water from which the entire creation emerged. It is the giver of life to all and has the potential of creating innumerable names and forms, the inert objects and the sentient beings and all that is auspicious in the world from the energy behind the universe. The leaves and coconut represent creation. The thread represents the love that "binds" all in creation. The kalasha is therefore considered auspicious and worshipped. The waters from all the holy rivers, the knowledge of all the Vedas and the blessings of all the deities are invoked in the kalasha and its water is thereafter used for all the rituals, including the abhisheka. The consecration (kumbhaabhisheka) of a temple is done in a grand manner with elaborate rituals including the pouring of one or more kalashas of holy water on the top of the temple. When the asuras and devas churned the milky ocean, the Lord appeared bearing the pot of nectar, which blessed one with everlasting life. Thus the kalasha also symbolizes immortality. Men of wisdom are full and complete as they identify with the infinite Truth (poornatvam). They brim with joy and love and respect all that is auspicious. We greet them with a purnakumbha ("full pot") acknowledging their greatness and as a sign of respectful and reverential welcome, with a "full heart".16. Why do we consider the lotus as special? The lotus is the symbol of truth, auspiciousness and beauty (satyam, shivam, sundaram). The Lord is also that nature and therefore, His various aspects are compared to a lotus (i.e. lotus-eyes, lotus feet, lotus hands, the lotus of the heart etc.).The lotus blooms with the rising sun and close at night. Similarly, our minds open up and expand with the light of knowledge. The lotus grows even in slushy areas. It remains beautiful and untainted despite its surroundings, reminding us that we too can and should strive to remain pure and beautiful within, under all circumstances. The lotus leaf never gets wet even though it is always in water. It symbolizes the man of wisdom (gyaani) who remains ever joyous, unaffected by the world of sorrow and change. This is revealed in a shloka from the Bhagwad-Geeta:Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?- 12 -Brahmanyaadhaaya karmaani Sangam tyaktvaa karoti yaha Lipyate na sa paapena Padma patram ivaambhasaaHe who does actions, offering them to Brahman (the Supreme), abandoning attachment, is not tainted by sin, just as a lotus leaf remains unaffected by the water on it.From this, we learn that what is natural to the man of wisdom becomes a discipline to be practiced by all saadhakas or spiritual seekers and devotees. Our bodies have certain energy centers described in the Yoga Shaastras as chakras. Each one is associated with lotus that has a certain number of petals. For example, a lotus with a thousand petals represents the Sahasra chakra at the top of the head, which opens when the yogi attains Godhood or Realisation. Also, the lotus posture (padmaasana) is recommended when one sits for meditation. A lotus emerged from the navel of Lord Vishnu. Lord Brahma originated from it to create the world. Hence, the lotus symbolizes the link between the creator and the supreme Cause. It also symbolizes Brahmaloka, the abode of Lord Brahma. The auspicious sign of the swastika is said to have evolved from the lotus.17. Why do we worship tulasi? In Sanskrit, tulanaa naasti athaiva tulasi - that which is incomparable (in its qualities) is the tulasiFor Indians it is one of the most sacred plants. In fact it is known to be the only thing used in worship, which, once used, can be washed and reused in pooja - as it is regarded so self-purifying.As one story goes, Tulasi was the devoted wife of Shankhachuda, a celestial being. She believed that Lord Krishna tricked her into sinning. So she cursed Him to become a stone (shaaligraama). Seeing her devotion and adhered to righteousness, the Lord blessed her saying that she would become the worshipped plant, tulasi that would adorn His head. Also that all offerings would be incomplete without the tulasi leaf - hence the worship of tulasi. She also symbolises Goddess Lakshmi, the consort of Lord Vishnu. Those who wish to be righteous and have a happy family life worship the tulasi.Tulasi is married to the Lord with all pomp and show as in any wedding. This is because according to another legend, the Lord blessed her to be His consort. Satyabhama once weighed Lord Krishna against all her legendary wealth. The scales did not balance till a single tulasi leaf was placed along with the wealth on the scale by Rukmini with devotion. Thus the tulasi played the vital role of demonstrating to the world that even a small object offered with devotion means more to the Lord than all the wealth in the world. The tulasi leaf has great medicinal value and is used to cure various ailments, including the common cold.

13 -I bow down to the tulasi,
At whose base are all the holy places, At whose top reside all the deities and In whose middle are all the Vedas.18. Why do we blow the conch? When the conch is blown, the primordial sound of Om emanates. Om is an auspicious sound that was chanted by the Lord before creating the world. It represents the world and the Truth behind it.As the story goes, the demon Shankhaasura defeated devas, the Vedas and went to the bottom of the ocean. The devas appealed to Lord Vishnu for help. He incarnated as Matsya Avataara - the "fish incarnation" and killed Shankhaasura. The Lord blew the conch-shaped bone of his ear and head. The Om sound emanated, from which emerged the Vedas. All knowledge enshrined in the Vedas is an elaboration of Om. The conch therefore is known as shankha after Shankaasua. The conch blown by the Lord is called Paanchajanya. He carries it at all times in one of His four hands. It represents dharma or righteousness that is one of the four goals (purushaarthas) of life. The sound of the conch is thus also the victory call of good over evil.Another well-known purpose of blowing the conch and the instruments, known traditionally to produce auspicious sounds is to drown or mask negative comments or noises that may disturb or upset the atmosphere or the minds of worshippers.Ancient India lived in her villages. Each village was presided over by a primary temple and several small ones. During the aarati performed after all-important poojas and on sacred occasions, the conch used to be blown. Since villages were generally small, the sound of the conch would be heard all over the village. People who could not make it to the temple were reminded to stop whatever they were doing, at least for a few seconds, and mentally bow to the Lord. The conch sound served to briefly elevate people's minds to a prayerful attitude even in the middle of their busy daily routine. The conch is placed at the altar in temples and homes next to the Lord as a symbol of Naada Brahma (Truth), the Vedas, Om, dharma, victory and auspiciousness. It is often used to offer devotees thirtha (sanctified water) to raise their minds to the highest Truth. It is worshipped with the following verse.Twam puraa saagarot pannaha Vishnunaa vidhrutahakare Devaischa poojitha sarvahi Panchjanya namostu teSalutations to Panchajanya the conch born of the ocean Held in the hand of Lord Vishnu and worshipped by all devaas19. Why do we say shaanti thrice?Shaanti, meaning "peace", is a natural state of being. Disturbances are created either by others or us. For example, peace already exists in a place until someone makes noise. Therefore, peace underlies all our agitations. When agitations end, peace is naturally experienced since it was already there. Where there is peace, there is happiness. Therefore, every one without exception desires peace in his/her life.
Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?-
14 -However, peace within or without seems very hard to attain because it is covered by our own agitations. A rare few manage to remain peaceful within even in the midst of external agitation and troubles. To invoke peace, we chant prayers. By chanting prayers, troubles end and peace is experienced internally, irrespective of the external disturbances. All such prayers end by chanting shaanti thrice. It is believed that trivaram satyam - that which is said thrice comes true. For emphasizing a point we repeat a thing thrice. In the court of law also, one who takes the witness stands says, "I shall speak the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth".We chant shaanti thrice to emphasise our intense desire for peace. All obstacles, problems and sorrows originate from three sources.Aadhidaivika : The unseen divine forces over which we have little or no control like earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions etc.Aadhibhautika: The known factors around us like accidents, human contacts, pollution, crime etc.Aadhyaatmika : We sincerely pray to the Lord that at least while we undertake special tasks or even in our daily lives, there are no problems or that, problems are minimised from the three sources written about above.May peace alone prevail. Hence shaanti is chanted thrice. It is chanted aloud the first time, addressing the unseen forces. It is chanted softer the second time, directed to our immediate surroundings and those around, and softest the last time as it is addressed to oneself.
20. Why do we offer a coconut?
In India one of the most common offerings in a temple is a coconut. It is also offered on occasions like weddings, festivals, the use of a new vehicle, bridge, house etc. It is offered in the sacrificial fire whilst performing homa. The coconut is broken and placed before the Lord. It is later distributed as prasaada. The fibre covering of the dried coconut is removed except for a tuft on the top. The marks on the coconut make it look like the head of a human being. The coconut is broken, symbolising the breaking of the ego. The juice within, representing the inner tendencies (vaasanas) is offered along with the white kernel - the mind, to the Lord.A mind thus purified by the touch of the Lord is used as prasaada ( a holy gift). In the traditional abhishekha ritual done in all temples and many homes, several materials are poured over the deity like milk, curd, honey, tender coconut water, sandal paste, holy ash etc. Each material has a specific significance of bestowing certain benefits on worshippers. Tender coconut water is used in abhisheka rituals since it is believed to bestow spiritual growth on the seeker. The coconut also symbolises selfless service. Every part of the tree -the trunk, leaves, fruit, coir etc. Is used in innumerable ways like thatches, mats, tasty dishes, oil, soap etc. It takes in even salty water from the earth and converts it into sweet nutritive water that is especially beneficial to sick people. It is used in the preparation of many ayurvedic medicines and in other alternative medicinal systems. The marks on the coconut are even thought to represent the three-eyed Lord Shiva and therefore it is considered to be a means to fulfill our desires.Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?
-21. Why do we chant Om?
Om is one of the most chanted sound symbols in India. It has a profound effect on the body and mind of the one who chants and also on the surroundings. Most mantras and vedic prayers start with Om.All auspicious actions begin with Om. It is even used as a greeting - Om, Hari Om etc. It is repeated as a mantra or meditated upon. Its form is worshipped, contemplated upon or used as an auspicious sign.Om is the universal name of the Lord. It is made up of the letters A (phonetically as in "around"), U (phonetically as in "put") and M (phonetically as in "mum"). The sound emerging from the vocal chords starts from the base of the throat as "A". With the coming together of the lips, "U" is formed and when the lips are closed, all sounds end in "M".The three letters symbolize the three states (waking, dream and deep sleep), the three deities (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva), the three Vedas (Rig, Yajur and Sama) the three worlds (Bhuh, Bhuvah, Suvah) etc. The Lord is all these and beyond. The formless, attributeless Lord (Brahman) is represented by the silence between two Om Chants. Om is also called pranava that means, "that (symbol or sound) by which the Lord is praised". The entire essence of the Vedas is enshrined in the word Om. It is said that the Lord started creating the world after chanting Om and atha. Hence its sound is considered to create an auspicious beginning for any task that we undertake. The Om chant should have the resounding sound of a bell (aaooommm).Om is written in different ways in different places. The most common form symbolizes Lord Ganesha’s. The upper curve is the head; the lower large one, the stomach; the side one, the trunk; and the semi-circular mark with the dot, the sweetmeat ball (modaka) in Lord Ganesha's hand. Thus Om symbolizes everything - the means and the goal of life, the world and the Truth behind it, the material and the Sacred, all form and the Formless.22. Why do we do aarati?Towards the end of every ritualistic worship (pooja or bhajan) of the Lord or to welcome an honored guest or saint, we perform the aarati. This is always accompanied by the ringing of the bell and sometimes by singing, playing of musical instruments and clapping. It is one of the sixteen steps (shodasha upachaara) of the pooja ritual. It is referred to as the lighted lamp in the right hand, which we wave in a clockwise circling movement to light the entire form of the Lord. Each part is revealed individually and also the entire form of the Lord. As the light is waved we either do mental or loud chanting of prayers or simply behold the beautiful form of the Lord, illumined by the lamp. At the end of the aarati we place our hands over the flame and then gently touch our eyes and the top of the head.We have seen and participated in this ritual from our childhood. Let us find out why we do the aarati?Having worshipped the Lord of love - performing abhisheka, decorating the image and offering fruits and delicacies, we see the beauty of the Lord in all His glory. Our minds are focused on each limb of the Lord as the lamp lights it up. It is akin to silent open-eyed meditation on His beauty. The singing, clapping, ringing of the bell etc. denote the joy and auspiciousness, which accompanies the vision of the Lord.Hindu Rituals and Routines Why do we follow them?- 16 -Aarati is often performed with camphor. This holds a telling spiritual significance. Camphor when lit, burns itself out completely without leaving a trace of it. It represents our inherent tendencies (vaasanas). When lit by the fire of knowledge which illumines the Lord (Truth), our vaasanas thereafter burn themselves out completely, not leaving a trace of ego which creates in us a sense of individuality that keeps us separate from the Lord. Also while camphor burns to reveal the glory of Lord, it emits a pleasant perfume even while it sacrifices itself. In our spiritual progress, even as we serve the guru and society, we should willingly sacrifice ourselves and all we have, to spread the "perfume" of love to all. We often wait a long while to see the illumined Lord but when the aarati is actually performed, our eyes close automatically as if to look within. This is to signify that each of us is a temple of the Lord.Just as the priest reveals the form of the Lord clearly with the aarati flame, so too the guru reveals to us the divinity within each of us with the help of the "flame" of knowledge (or the light of spiritual knowledge). At the end of the aarati, we place our hands over the flame and then touch our eyes and the top of the head. It means - may the light that illuminated the Lord light up my vision; may my vision be divine and my thoughts noble and beautiful. The philosophical meaning of aarati extends further. The sun, moon, stars, lightning and fire are the natural sources of light. The Lord is the source of this wonderous phenomenon of the universe. It is due to Him alone that all else exist and shine. As we light up the Lord with the flame of the aarati, we turn our attention to the very source of all light, which symbolizes knowledge and life. Also the sun is the presiding deity of the intellect, the moon, that of the mind, and fire, that of speech. The Lord is the supreme consciousness that illuminates all of them. Without Him, the intellect cannot think, nor can the mind feel nor the tongue speaks. The Lord is beyond the mind, intellect and speech. How can this finite equipment illuminate the Lord? Therefore, as we perform the aarati we chant;Na tatra suryo bhaati na chandra taarakam Nemaa vidyuto bhaanti kutoyamagnib Tameva bhaantam anubhaati sarvam Tasya bhasa sarvam idam vibhaatiHe is there where the sun does not shine, Nor the moon, stars and lightning. then what to talk of this small flame (in my hand), Everything (in the universe) shines only after the Lord, And by His light alone are we all illumined. Swami Chinmayananda
